Simon has a certificate in Education from the University of London at Trent Park College. This course was for instrumental teachers and, as well as studying class teaching, he learned the other woodwind instruments to a high level under some distinguished teachers: Lois Ryecroft for flute, Basil Tchaikov for clarinet, Gordon Lewin for saxophone and Brian Wightman for bassoon.
He taught for two years for the Borough of Oldham in Greater Manchester and for one year for the County of Staffordshire before he moved to Munich to study oboe. Later, in Scotland, he taught for many years in a number of Edinburgh private schools including Fettes College and George Heriot’s School, he was also the oboe tutor for St Mary’s Music School.
He has been oboe teacher at the North East of Scotland Music School in Aberdeen and has acted as oboe tutor for Summer Schools organised by the Aberdeen Festival and by the Scottish Schools’ Orchestral Trust.
He is currently employed as a woodwind instructor by Fife Council teaching
the whole range of woodwind instruments. He is also the visiting teacher
of oboe for the University of St Andrews where he is able to teach both
students and adult players.
